Rum, cigars, old cars, revolutionary history, beautiful Caribbean beaches and coral reefs. Mix it up altogether in and around one island and there you have it, Cuba! It is not a destination I merely ticked off, it is a destination I experienced. By drinking mojitos, smoking Monte Cristo cigars and dance salsa in the capital called Havana (… but I did much more!). If Your Child Is Sitting Like This, Here’s Why You Need to Stop Them Now
My daughter’s just over a year old, so there’s really not much she’s doing “wrong” yet. (Trust me, like all of us, she’ll get there.) If she smacks our family pet, it’s less hostility and more that she doesn’t have full control of her arms. If she throws her food, it’s not an act of insubordination but just her method of communicating that she’s done eating. So, when a family member alerted me to something my child was doing that she needed to stop at once, I was taken aback. Especially because, at that particular moment, she wasn’t stealing her playmate’s toys or eating an expensive coaster as she’s sometimes known to do. She was just sitting there.
Turns out, the way she was sitting — with each leg splayed at her side, knees in front and feet behind, to form a “W” shape — was all kinds of bad.
According to a vast majority of physical therapists, there are several key reasons why:
W-sitting limits core strength because it gives kids a wider base of support. Because they don’t have to engage their abdominal or back muscles in this position, kids often prefer it to more challenging, tiring positions, like with legs in front, at their sides, or crisscrossed.
W-sitting causes muscle tightness, particularly in the legs and hips but also knees and ankles.
W-sitting aggravates neurological issues such as low muscle tone, which means when kids aren’t actively using their muscles, those muscles are floppier and softer and have a harder time holding their bodies upright.
What this all means, most therapists agree, is that prolonged W-sitting throughout childhood can lead to a delayed development in gross motor skills like coordination and balance. For those parents hoping to raise a star athlete, this position’s effect on postural muscles can also be cause for concern.
This is a modal window.
The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported.
Why do some kids sit like this? It’s by far the steadiest way for children of all ages to sit, and aside from that innate tendency to achieve the most stability, it’s also been attributed to time spent in infant carrier devices, like swings, bouncy seats, and car seats.
Seeing as my daughter had graduated from infancy, I was immediately concerned that the damage was already done. I had tried my best to limit her time in her baby swing and the oversize, overpriced ExerSaucer that I had bought under the assumption it was actually good for a baby’s development, but here she was, W-sitting at every turn. I had never noticed it until now.
What can be done? Well, the somewhat alarmist recommendation is to get them to stop doing it immediately — that, whenever you see your child W-sitting, you either physically move their legs into a suitable position (if they’re too young to understand) or tell them to do so.
So, with a watchful eye, I adjusted her legs every time she sat incorrectly, and my husband and I instructed our child’s caretakers to do the same. Occasionally I’d correct her, and it’d be fine, but plenty of times, adjusting one of her legs would make her cry and most times, doing so annoyed her to the point that she was no longer interested in sitting and scooted off to go do something else.
She wasn’t the only one getting fed up, and it had only been a week. I dug a little deeper and found that a few pediatric occupational therapists out there don’t view this seated position as a problem necessarily. There’s not much evidence that shows causation. That is, yes, children who W-sit often have orthopedic issues and muscle tightness. But W-sitting hasn’t been proven to be the cause of those issues, which makes one wonder: could tight hamstrings and hip dysplasia lead to W-sitting, not the other way around?
One such unconvinced therapist, Rachel Coley, happens to be the mother to a W-sitter and maintains it’s perfectly normal for kids to sit this way.
She notes that it’s a simple sign of flexibility and aids in fine motor control because you need to assume the most stable seated position possible when engaging in tasks that require “coordinated, controlled movements of the hands and fingers.” Coley also noted that, for babies in particular, W-sitting provides a convenient, “natural transition” from crawling or kneeling to sitting.
However, based on how strongly most certified therapists feel about W-sitting, I’m not taking any chances. I’m going to keep my eye on it, and I’ll encourage other parents who were unaware of this issue to do the same, especially if they have older kids showing some of the negative side effects. But, if my child is having the time of her life smacking two wooden blocks together, I’m not going to spoil the fun if she happens to be W-sitting.
Looking for ways to spring clean your home in no time? Good. I’ve got some tried and tested ways that I’m going to share with you. Spring cleaning is one of my favorite things about the spring season, but unfortunately, I can’t enjoy it to the fullest since my schedule is always overloaded. So I’ve found a few ways to spring clean my home fast that are also great for those who don’t like cleaning.
1. Clean mini blinds
Yes, I want to start with the worst part about spring cleaning. I’m sure many of you would agree that cleaning mini blinds is a great pain. However, I’ve learned a small tip that makes it really easier. Just take your mini blinds down and wash them in the bath. They’ll be cleaner in no time!
2. Wash your walls
If you used to wash your walls by hand, this spring try washing them with a mop instead. This will save you a lot of time, I promise! Now that I know this little trick, washing my walls isn’t a big problem anymore. Give it a try and you will never think of washing the walls as a great pain.
3. Clean your oven
I don’t understand those people who clean their oven by hand when they have a self-cleaning one. A self-cleaning oven works amazingly and is so easy to operate. If you have a self-cleaning oven, just turn it on and it will do its thing. While it’s cleaning, the oven gets extremely hot and there can be a terrible smell, but you can go outdoors to avoid the smell, or do another chore to complete your spring cleaning faster.
4. Give your carpets to the professionals
If you have carpets, I suggest you to hire them done. It’s better and easier. It’s also incredibly time-saving. The professional knows what they’re doing and they can be more experienced at stain removal than you are. If you can afford, give your carpets to the professionals.
5. Purchase a ceiling fan cleaner
Purchase a ceiling fan cleaner so that you don’t have to climb up and take it all apart. Indeed, there’s a great device that you can purchase that cleans the ceiling fan. It’s like a duster but created to fit over every blade. While you still should clean the globes, it helps save you immense amounts of time and headache.
6. Clean your curtains
If you have trouble cleaning your curtains, I recommend doing all of your curtains at once. Take the day, take your curtains down and wash them. After washing, hang your curtains back up. Don’t forget to check the instructions and learn how to properly launder them. Maybe your curtains are dry clean only ones. Follow the instructions on the label and you won’t have any problems.
7. Don’t do it alone
If you share a home or if you have a big family, don’t do your spring cleaning alone, it’s just too much for one person. Have everybody muck in and help and you’ll get it done quicker and you will even have time for a spring picnic or family BBQ.
Follow these tips and you will do your spring cleaning faster and easier. Which tricks do you use to do your spring cleaning quicker? Share them with me, please, I will certainly try them all!
Everyone knows that the best way to build credit is to get a credit card. But, there are certain ways to build your credit history without using a credit card. Typically, a credit card means debt, and too much debt can affect your credit score. To avoid it, check out a few tips for building your credit without using credit cards.
1. Utility companies
Typically, a utility company doesn’t report to the credit bureaus on a regular basis. It only sends updates when you don’t pay your account. If you have some utility in your name and you are trying to build your credit without using your credit card, call the company and ask them to report your regular payments to the credit bureaus.
2. A landlord
Like a utility company, a landlord doesn’t report to the credit bureaus. However, you can ask your landlord to notify the credit bureaus of your rental history, but first make sure your rental history is really good. Every positive report from your landlord will establish your credit history and better your credit score.
3. A federal student loan
If you are planning to go to a university or college, you can build your credit by getting a federal student loan. Despite your credit history, you can qualify for a loan. Although repayment may be deferred until 6 to 9 months after you graduate, you can begin paying it off while you are still in college. Timely payments every month will add positive information to your credit history.
4. Add your name to your parent’s credit card
Another way to build your credit without using your credit cards is to add your name to your parent’s credit card. As an authorized user, your parent’s credit card’s activity will appear on your credit report. Just ensure your parent uses this credit card responsibly, otherwise it can affect your credit score.
5. Financing a used car
If you do not have a credit history, many car dealerships may not offer financing. But if you buy your car from a fresh start car dealer, consider qualifying for a loan without credit history. It usually offers in-house financing. Yes, you might pay a higher interest rate, but timely payments every month will help you build your credit history, and it can even help you qualify for a better loan down the road.
6. Peer-to-peer lending
Nowadays there are many individual investors who give private loans to people with no credit history. Typically, these loans have lower rates than rates offered by banks. Plus, if you ask politely, a private investor can report your timely monthly payments to the credit bureau.
7. A small collateral loan
Have you already opened an account with a credit union or bank? If no, consider getting a small personal loan. This will help you to build your credit without using credit cards. You can use any valuable assets as collateral, such as jewelry or electronics. Qualify for a small loan and pay it off over the next several months. The credit union or bank will certainly report your timely monthly payments to all credit bureaus.
A credit card is convenient and useful, but you can get into debt if you can’t control your spending. Follow these tips and you can establish your credit history without having a credit card. Are you going to use any of the suggestions mentioned above?
Getting a new job has always been a stressful event for every person. But why do people find it extremely difficult and stressful? I think it happens due to unbridled fear of uncertainty, lack of professional skills, knowledge and experience.
I’m a sensitive person and when I get a new job, I automatically start worrying and asking myself too many odd questions. My obsessive chain of what-if-questions really drives me crazy, steals my confidence and even fills my heart with fear or diffidence.
As a reasonable and rational thinking personality, I usually suppress my negative thoughts and put an end to obsessive thinking by sticking to common rules, standards and tips on how to become an indispensable part of a new work team in a quite short period of time.
While these seven tips are effective, sometimes employees have to face the challenges of abnormal situations in different spheres of life, especially career. Even if you do everything right at work, the work team will always be divided into your friends and haters. You shouldn’t get upset about it, but realize that you’re not a dollar to be loved and respected by everyone.
If some of your coworkers feel an antipathy towards you, keep calm and try to find a different approach to them. It will help you handle the situation and prove everyone that you’re a friendly, successful and valuable worker. I hope my experiences will help you quickly adapt to your new work environment and win the respect of your coworkers.
1. First impression is crucially important
When you’re crossing the threshold of a new office, you should remember that your success, reputation and status depend on the impression you’ll make during the first 5 minutes of the conversation with your potential coworkers. They will pay considerable attention to your appearance, words, manners, mindset and stand in life.
Nowadays every company has its own rules, standards, traditions, including dress code. By all means, try not to stem the tide by expressing your individuality through clothing, because such inequality will certainly trigger conflicts and indignation within the work team, and turn its members against you.
Furthermore, make sure you control your emotions and behave in a confident way, because your eyes reflect your inner emotional state like a mirror. If you feel that your fear and anxiety are going out of control, try to prevail over them, using different meditation techniques that will quickly stabilize your emotional well-being.
2. Adhere to the golden mean
Communication with new colleagues is an incredibly challenging thing. You should always keep in mind that every person has its own comfort zone, stereotypes, views and principles.
Some easy going personalities can quickly open their hearts to you and become your friends, while others need a bit of a reality check and don’t want someone like you to penetrate their comfort zone and thrust your friendship to them. If you see that someone keeps a distance from you, it’s desirable just to accept it and show respect for their opinion.
If you want to speed up the acquaintance process, try to speak the language of your colleagues. Use their slang and avoid obscure words, phrases or jokes. This way, you’ll turn from a stranger into a respected insider in a twinkling of an eye. But you should always remember about the rule of the Golden Mean. This rule is the guarantee of your success in both your life and career. The main thing is not to go too far in everything you do.
3. Keep a stiff upper lip
As a newcomer, you should be mentally ready to deal with mobbing and other types of emotional pressure. Have you ever thought about why workmates mock the newcomers and each other?
It usually happens when they either hate each other cordially or want to check the strength of the newcomer’s character and get to know how they act in different stressful situations. This kind of an acid test gives them an opportunity to see your true colors, strong points and weaknesses. At any rate, you should do all possible and impossible things to remain unprovoked, even if your coworkers decide to get on your nerves.
They might start abusing their position and become impudent by asking you to do numerous tasks you’re not responsible for. In such a case, you should let them know that you’re ready to help them, but you won’t clean the office alone or work overtime on a regular basis. Propose them to assign the tasks fairly. It’s crucially important to state your proposition firmly, but calmly.
4. Make a first step
I know that it’s very difficult to take the initiative, but this habit is the key to a happy, harmonious and successful life. If you’ve just got a job, show your worth and earn favorable reputation. Remember, you’ll never achieve a desirable result, until you find common language or make friends with your colleagues.
You live in the society where the business sphere is round like the Earth. From time to time you’ll meet and have to deal with the same people. But how can you establish and maintain good relations at work?
The newcomer should learn to make the first step. You may invite your coworkers to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or something else together. You’ll have a chance to communicate in a relaxed, cheerful and friendly atmosphere. But be careful and try not to overshoot the mark, because sometimes too much familiarity can breed contempt.
5. Find a team-mate
Just because you’re at work you shouldn’t spend all the time alone like an ole eagle. Effective and productive teamwork has become the main priority for many companies. Every member of the team, as an essential part of a big mechanism, has to work hard and cooperate with others successfully. Those who don’t satisfy these requirements are fired. The company can do it just for the sake of its stability and prosperity. If you don’t want it to happen, you should do your best to establish good work relationships with all your coworkers.
In case you find it too difficult, try to get on well with at least one team-mate and ask them to bring you up to date. As soon as you enlist the support of an experienced and respected team member, you’ll significantly rise in other colleagues’ estimation and become more confident.
Don’t fear to ask for such a help. Many people can’t imagine their lives without mentoring. They become mentors for various reasons. It usually boosts their confidence and ego, increases their professionalism and even improves karma, because gratuitous help is the choice of kind-hearted and wonderful people.
6. Keep your tongue in check
Your tongue can be either your friend or the worst enemy. During the trial period it’s strongly recommended to keep a still tongue in your head. Before you utter a word, you should always think what you say, to whom and what for. It’s important because one day every word or phrase said by you may be used against you by your workmates.
When you’re among your colleagues, you’d better speak on the case and ask everything only about the specifics of your work. They may start spreading rumors about the others in your presence, but you should keep silent and resist the temptation to add your two cents. If you say something bad about other team members behind their backs, they’ll certainly get to know about it.
7. Try to be a source of positivity
Positive people with a perfect sense of humor are always worth their weight in gold. If you’re one of them, then you should take advantage of this wondrous God-Given quality and realize that all the doors are open to you. No matter whether you’re a mature and professional specialist or not, a frank smile is a magic thing that makes even a newcomer an extremely attractive and confident person.
Have you ever noticed that the personalities who smile and carry positivity regardless of everything are always surrounded by lots of people? Without a doubt, smile and positive attitude are the secrets of their attraction. Every time you meet your colleagues face to face, smile for the sake of your success.
If you want to adjust to a new work team, consider following these pieces of advice. The main point is to behave naturally and remember that you’re individuality. Do you adjust to a new job quickly? What other ways to get along with colleagues do you know? Share your tips with us.
Wondering why you should quit your job and become a teacher? Even though teachers don’t have high paychecks, some people choose to be teachers and love their career choice. Teachers play a crucial role in creating a stable, professional and well-educated workforce. They also play a significant role in children development.
In many parts of the world, the number of people that want to teach children dwindles. It’s not only because of low paychecks, it’s because modern children are very complicated. They’re a completely different breed of human. They stop respecting teachers and being interested in education overall. Despite this, teaching is quite a rewarding career. Here’s why you should consider becoming a teacher:
1. It’s a steady job
When working for a small or big company, there’s always a possibility of losing your job one day. Since teachers are in demand these days, you have a lower risk of job loss. The best part of having a steady job is that you know that you will definitely get your paycheck the next month.
2. You won’t feel stuck
Once in a while, you might feel overwhelmed , but not stuck. Teaching is tons of fun. Many teachers claim that their job helps them survive hard times and smile when they want to cry. Children may cause many problems, but mostly they tend to bring joy and happiness in our lives.
Moreover, you will learn many things and precious lessons not only from the books, but from your students as well. They will inspire you to be a better teacher and improve yourself. They might even teach you to respect and love yourself.
3. Share your knowledge
Okay, you can share your knowledge in the office, but it might work against you. When you share your knowledge with kids, though, you are sure that they won’t betray you. Sharing knowledge is a fantastic feeling. Imagine having this sort of feeling each work day. Isn’t it a good reason to become a teacher?
4. You will hear ‘thank you’ more often than ever
Despite the fact that students have a tendency to hate their teachers, teaching is a respected job. Most adults are thankful to their teachers for their knowledge. Parents are grateful to teachers for their work too. Most of us trust and respect teachers because we know that we won’t reach success without their knowledge.
5. You’ll have longer vacations
One of the benefits of being a teacher is that you have longer vacations each year. Many people working in the office have no vacation at all. Moreover, some of them haven’t taken a vacation for years. Teachers have a vacation, whether they want it or not, which makes it one of the best jobs for workaholics.
6. Feel proud of yourself
Watching your students tackle difficult tasks and enter prestigious universities will make you feel proud of yourself. As a teacher, you play a huge role in your students’ success. They know what they know thanks to you. This will make you feel proud of yourself each day.
7. Influence the next generation
As I mentioned above, modern kids are different breed of human. As a teacher, you can change their worldview or perspective. You have the power to shape new opportunities, new minds and brand new ideas. Shortly, you can totally influence the next generation.
Michelle Obama once said, “… good teachers aren’t just critical for the success of our students. They are the key to the success of our economy.” The more good teachers the country has, the more prosperous future it has. Of course, these are not all of the reasons why you should become a teacher. You may have your own ones too. Do you think teaching is a great job? If you are a teacher, let us know why you love your job.
