5 Important Tips for Promoting Your Business on Instagram

Instagram is a great tool for promoting your business, especially if you offer visually-appealing products such as T-shirts or fashion accessories. However, even if the products you offer don’t translate well into photographs, Instagram is still a great network for raising brand awareness. Here are five sure-fire ways to gain more followers and increase the visibility of your business on Instagram.

1. Consistent posting is key
Keep your followers engaged and grab the attention of new followers by posting to Instagram every day, multiple times if possible. If you don’t have enough unique photos for this, crosspost other interesting photos that you find online. Also, you can post images consisting of overlaid text such as interesting quotations. Quotations are generally effective because users who agree with the quote tend to tag their friends in the comment section, thus increasing the visibility of your profile.

2. Use the power of the Hashtag
Categorize all of your posts by including numerous hashtags in the caption box. Research trending hashtag phrases and incorporate them to increase your content’s visibility. Also, create a unique hashtag for your business and include it in your posts periodically. Doing so automatically generates a unique category for your content and allows users to easily find your tagged photos via Instagram’s search feature.

3. Offer special promotions
Occasionally offer special promotions to your followers such as free or discounted merchandise. Require users to share your photos or use your business’ unique hashtag to be eligible for each promotion. This strategy basically generates free marketing for your business: participating users will be advertising your profile to all of their own followers. Also, new users will be compelled to follow your profile in order to take part in future promotions, giving you a larger base of potential customers.

4. Crosspost your Instagram profile
Instagram’s search feature lacks the advanced functionality of other social networks such as Facebook and Google Plus. Therefore, it can be difficult for users to find your profile unless they already know your username. To mitigate this effect, share your Instagram profile on all of the other social networks that you use. Set your photos to automatically crosspost to Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus so that your followers on those sites can easily navigate to your Instagram profile. Also, set up an Instagram widget on any blogs or external websites that your business uses in order to compel visitors to follow your profile and receive future updates.

5. Advertise in the real world with stickers and business cards
Invest in inexpensive stickers and business cards that feature your Instagram username and/or your business’ unique hashtag. Give them to customers who purchase your products or services so that they help you advertise in the real world. Advertise locally by placing your stickers in public places that get a substantial amount of pedestrian traffic. Doing so will inspire users to look up your profile on their mobile devices during their commutes.

Every successful social media marketing campaign should take advantage of Instagram’s vast user base. Regardless of what type of business you are promoting, Instagram offers an easy way to increase brand awareness while acquiring new customers in the process. Are you going to use Instagram to promote your business?

9 Reasons to Load Your Fruit Salad with Oranges

You know oranges are jam-packed with nutrients: high in vitamin C, fiber, folate and antioxidants, and low in calories and sugar. But do you know about the health benefits oranges offer apart from immune-boosting properties? They are awesomely surprising. Whether you love oranges or you eat them once in a while, the following reasons will make you load your summer fruit salads with oranges on a daily basis.

1. Keep your kidneys healthy

Help your kidneys function properly by including at least one orange in your daily meal plan. If you love orange juice, it is better. Orange juice is a good source of a natural form of citrate that slows down kidney stone formation and can help to reduce your risk for kidney disease.

2. Turn back the hands of time

Oranges boast powerful anti-aging properties thanks to their high antioxidant content. Vitamin C protects the skin against damage from UVA and UVB rays, stimulates collagen production, prevents pigmentation and inflammatory skin conditions.

3. Make your heart stronger

Here is why: oranges are rich in potassium, an essential mineral for heart health. Low potassium level may lead to abnormal heart rhythms, especially if you suffer from heart disease. Since potassium deficiency is a common problem these days, it it critical to consume foods high in potassium. Orange is one of them.

4. Banish viral infections

Consuming foods that are rich in polyphenols can help you strengthen your immune system, which in turn will help protect you from viral infections. Oranges are plentiful in polyphenols known for their anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic, anti-carcinogenic and anti-proliferative properties.

5. Increase your fiber intake

Fiber plays an important role in keeping high cholesterol levels at bay, lowering your risk for atherosclerosis. Fiber can also help manage type 2 diabetes since it keeps blood sugar levels under control. Oranges are high in fiber so eating them regularly will help you increase your fiber intake and improve your overall health

6. Improve your eye health

Our eyes suffer more than ever. We keep them busy most of the time so we have to protect them. Wearing glasses is not the only solution. Foods that are rich in vitamin A do the better work. Not only they do protect your vision, but they can also help prevent macular degeneration. Oranges are not the best source of vitamin A, but one cup contains 8% of the daily recommended intake.

7. Fight free radical damage

Free radicals attack the body’s cells and can cause serious damage in the body, including heart disease and cancer. Oranges are packed with vitamin C that protects the body’s cells by neutralizing free radicals.

8. Boost brain power

Vitamin B9 found in oranges promotes healthy brain development and boosts brain power. This is a reason why pregnant women should include oranges in their eating plan (in moderation, of course), as they help prevent the baby from developing neurological disorders.

9. Relieve constipation

As I mentioned above, oranges are rich in fiber – both soluble and insoluble – that is essential for your digestive health and regular bowel movements. Eating an orange a day can help you avoid irritable bowel syndrome, including constipation. A glass of fresh orange juice can help with constipation too.

If you are not eating oranges and not drinking fresh orange juice at least once a week, why not start today? They boast many other health benefits that you can reap. Add oranges to your salads or oatmeal, use in your smoothies or drink juice. But, do not forget about moderation, especially if you suffer from any type of disease.

Owl crashing into power cables hits police force’s phones and communications

After an owl flew into power cables, Avon and Somerset Police urged people to dial 999 on 28 August only if there was a genuine emergency. Such was the disruption that people were also urged to avoid dialling the non-emergency 101 service as other forces came to Avon and Somerset’s support.

The owl was at least living up to its nocturnal nature. The accident occurred at 3.30 a.m. on the bank holiday Monday – taking most of the power out at the force’s headquarters in Portishead.

Becky Tipper, the centre manager for communications at Avon and Somerset Police, told the BBC staff had been requested to come in on their day off to ensure that people dialling 999 could speak to someone.

Avon and Somerset typically picks up 3,000 calls on bank holiday Monday.

She said: “We are running our 999 service and a reduced 101 service but problems are still ongoing so we would ask people to think before you call as we need to keep those emergency lines free for people who really need our help.”

In a statement on the force’s website, a statement read: “We currently have computer and phone problems which is affecting our ability to respond to your calls.

“We are responding to 999 emergency calls but would urge that only genuine 999 calls for assistance are made to us.

“Thank you for your patience and support.”

Harvard’s origami-inspired folding robot can run without battery or wired power source

Representational image of a battery-less origami robotGetty
A team of researchers at the Harvard John A Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering has created battery-free folding robots that can perform complex, repeatable movements using electromagnetic power transmission and resonance.

Inspired by the ancient Japanese art of origami, these folding robots can be introduced in hard-to-reach environments to perform complex movements by changing their physical configuration. Unlike traditional folding bots limited by bulky batteries, the new ones are highly functional and just as light as their paper inspiration.

“Like origami, one of the main points of our design is simplicity,” says co-author of the study Je-sung Koh. “This system requires only basic, passive electronic components on the robot to deliver an electric current – the structure of the robot itself takes care of the rest.”

These flat, thin bots are plastic tetrahedrons, consisting of three outer triangles connected to the central triangle – carrying a small circuit board – by a hinge. The hinges are attached to a metallic material called shape-memory alloy, which contracts like a tiny muscle, folding the robots’ outer triangles in towards the centre when current is passed through it and vice versa.

Powering origami robots

“The power that creates the electrical current needed for the robots’ movement is delivered wirelessly using electromagnetic power transmission,” the study reported in Science Robotics notes.

“An external coil with its own power source generates a magnetic field, which induces a current in the circuits in the robot, thus heating the SMA coils and inducing folding.” The coils can also contract independently on demand when hit with varying levels of magnetic resonance frequencies.

The team at Harvard demonstrated the capabilities of the folding robot by creating a small robotic arm with a special origami-like pattern. The arm, controlled by different electromagnetic frequencies, could bend left and right while opening and closing a gripper around an object.

Battery-Free Folding Robots from Wyss Institute on Vimeo.

Room for miniaturisation

While origami robots are still at a nascent stage of evolution, the team hopes to develop the minimalist approach for industrial, consumer and medical applications. For instance, swallowable micro-robots could offer an answer to an invasive endoscope by performing simple tasks such as holding tissues or filming, while being controlled from outside.

“There is still room for miniaturisation,” said lead researcher and roboticist Mustafa Boyvat. “We don’t think we went to the limit of how small these can be, and we’re excited to further develop our designs for biomedical applications”.

Scientists have been working on the origami robot technology for quite a while. Last year, researchers at MIT created a radio-controlled origami robot for healthcare purposes. The tiny device, which contained a magnet, could be steered inside the body using magnetic fields to pick up foreign objects or repair internal injuries.

AMD’s Vega-powered supercomputer packs 1 PetaFLOPS of compute power on a single server rack

AMD’s Project 47 achieves 1 PetaFLOPS – Representational ImageMorris MacMatzen/Getty Images
Last week, at its Capsaicin event in Los Angeles, AMD showcased Project 47, a space-saving supercomputer that can achieve 1 petaFLOPS of single-precision compute performance and handle one quadrillion calculations per second.

Though 1 petaFLOPS isn’t a record-breaking benchmark for modern day supercomputers that go upto100 PFlops, it is the footprint of this machine that strives to redefine supercomputing into a more affordable reality for machine learning, graphic virtualization, rendering, and other performance intensive tasks. Project 47 leverages Inventec’s 2U parallel computing platform P-47, AMD’s powerful EPYC server processors and upcoming Vega-based GPUs, all while sitting in a rack of individual servers.

Simply put, AMD’s new supercomputer takes 99.93% less space than IBM’s $100 million Roadrunner, the first supercomputer that broke the 1 petaFLOP barrier. The supermachine, which was the fastest in 2007, used 12,960 PowerXCell CPUs, 6,912 dual-core Opteron processors and took up as many as 296 racks covering nearly 6,000 square feet of floor space.

On the contrary, the advanced Project 47 only uses 80 Radeon Instinct MI25 GPUs, 20 AMD EPYC 7601 processors, and 20 Mellanox 100G cards, with 10TB of Samsung memory.

But, this system isn’t just about footprint and computing performance. It comes with 30 gigaFLOPS per watt energy efficiency and only requires 33.3 kW to deliver one 1 petaFLOP of single-precision or 2 petaFLOPS of half-precision compute performance. As noted by AMD, this is “25% more efficient than competing supercomputing platforms”. Team red also claims Project 47 has “more cores, threads, compute units, IO lanes and memory channels in use at one time than in any other similarly configured system ever before”.

As of now, there’s no word on pricing of Project 47, but AMD says, the system makes an incredible “performance-per-dollar” prospect and should be available from Inventec and their principal distributor AMAX sometime in Q4 of this year.

Thorium could power the next generation of nuclear reactors

A Dutch nuclear research institute has just fired up the first experiment in nearly half a century on next-generation molten-salt nuclear reactors based on thorium.

Thorium has long held promise for “safer” nuclear power. A slightly radioactive element, it transforms into fissionable U-233 when hit by high-energy neutrons. But after use, U-233 creates fewer long-lived radioactive waste products than the conventional U-235 now used in nuclear power plants.

But because nuclear power was traditionally tied up with nuclear weapons research into uranium and plutonium, thorium was mostly abandoned. Except for one test reactor that has been under construction at Kalpakkam since 2004, thorium reactor research has been moribund.

But now, NRG, a nuclear research facility in Petten, on the North Sea coast of the Netherlands, has launched the Salt Irradiation Experiment (SALIENT) in collaboration with the EU Commission. The researchers want to use thorium as a fuel for a molten salt reactor, one of the next-generation designs for nuclear power in which both the reactor coolant, and the fuel itself, are a mixture of hot, molten salt.

Many believe that molten salt reactors are well suited for using thorium as a fuel. Their unique working fluid can achieve very high temperatures, significantly boosting the efficiency of the power generation process.

The Petten team will use the facility’s reactor to melt a sample of thorium fuel and then bombard it with neutrons to transmute the thorium into U-233, which can sustain the chain reaction needed to generate energy.

A later step is to study tough, temperature-resistant metal alloys and other materials that can survive the high heat and corrosive conditions inside a molten-salt reactor. Eventually, they’ll need to examine how to deal with the waste from a molten salt thorium reactor. While largely considered safer than the long-lived products from a standard nuke, these will still need special disposal.

If this project bears fruit, there are many interests waiting to join the thorium club. A US startup based in Utah says it’s developing a thorium reactor, while a consortium of eastern Utah counties is exploring whether to participate in the project. Last month, Utah’s Seven County Infrastructure Coalition said it is searching for experts qualified to evaluate “a thorium energy facility for producing electricity”.

So is thorium power really back on the table? We’ll know by the end of the year, if the planned Kalpakkam test reactor in India starts generating energy. We will need clean energy sources to stave off climate change, yet fears raised by the Fukushima disaster have caused nuclear power to stagnate. If thorium’s long promise pays off, it’s not a moment too soon.
